Show made Detroit look nice
My wife and I watch this show called House Hunters almost every night. We always gripe they are never in Michigan. Well last night they had a woman in Grosse Point who was looking for a house in Harper Woods. Of course neither of them are Detroit, but they showed a lot of video of downtown and did an excellent job of making it look really nice. They showed the ball park, the river front and just about every clean part of the city there is and it looked nice. So hats off to the House Hunters crew, thanks for making our dump look so goooood. LOL

OMG I saw this show (I'm from MA) and I was enchanted with Harper Woods b/c of it. Then I did a city comparison between Harper Woods and Barnstable, MA (where I am) and surprisingly the crime here in MA is WORSE! ;-)
Is it really a bad place to live?

I can't really say I know much about Harper Woods other than IT'S NOT GROSSE POINT. One thing I've learned is not to read to much into the crime states on this site. Gaylord Michigan has a higher crime rating than most cities down state and it has nothing to do with the kind of crime that would make me stay away from an area. They have a lot of 2nd homes that sit unused and open for vandalism/break in's etc that I think drive up the rating.
Personally I don't care for city life so I'm going to be biased against any city that does not have more open land and a country type setting.

Evidently you dont watch House hunters enough. I have seen many episodes from there :the Detroit area, Livingston County, Ann Arbor and even Lansing was once on there.

I have seen that episode; its like 3 years old. The producers of the show have creative ways to make the nieghborhood nicer than what it is. In postproduction they make the grass greener, remove garbage from streets and even make the home itself nicer. They do what they must to make good ratings.

Why would someone basically downgrade from living in Grosse Pointe to buying a house in Harper Woods?
Foreclosure? Just couldn't afford Grosse Pointe anymore?
Seems kind of odd to me.

It was a young girl moving into her first house. Her parents lived in Grosse Point.

I'm not talking about where she was buying the house. They showed Downtown Detroit a lot and it looked nice. I don't know why they would bother removing anything. Hell I've seen episodes where the streets looked like slums and there was garbage everywhere.

Many of the suburbs have low to very low crime rate.

Either area is fine as far as crime rates go, although Harper Woods is starting to get a down-at-the-heel, Macomb County feel to it. HW is MUCH cheaper than GPte. St. Clair Shores is a good place too.
