Exclamation Ok Grossed Out!!!!!

What the blazes is an earwig?! From what I have read they are very hard to get rid of. I love gardening and they sound like a gardener's nightmare! Is there a way to provent them and/or get rid of them, without hurting my plants? And what other bugs should I be concerned about?

They really like to hang in dark damp places.

Typically they are a nuisance because of their diet, but normally do not present serious hazards to crop.

The last two years I spread some insect killer across my entire lawn. The amount of earwigs dropped A LOT. They also sell a pesticide that you spray around your house and this seemed to help. We used to get them really bad. Crazy as it sounds I found one of these in my basement one year.

But, of course, that's a salamander, not an earwig, right?

Earwigs look pretty ugly but they usually don't hurt anything. Salamanders, on the other hand! Actually I don't think they hurt anything either, but how did he get in your basement? Now that I think about it, we found one out in the yard behind our house in North Branch once . . . kind of a "wow, look at that!" experience more than anything else!

I have no idea how it got there. We have a finished basement, no cracks or holes anywhere. I have a small bucket next to my hot water tank, when I moved it I seen it sitting there. At first I thought it was one of my sons toys until it moved. I find them outside all the time, in fact I think I posted a photo on the Michigan thread of the 41 I found in my pool after a rain this year. That was wild. I read up on them and they say they make excellent pets but not to handle them because their skin is sensitive. They eat bugs and will even eat pinky mice. I love the critters I tend to find around our house.

What was the name of the insect killer and pesticide you used?

I used 3 different kinds over 2 years. I used the Ortho home defense granules and spray for around the base of the house. The other one was called Sevin Lawn Insect Granules. Last year I used both, this year I just used the lawn granules.
