I have a dear friend that is Hispanic and going through hell in this town. Her son had to move out of the Howell schools because of racism. It is unbelievable here and considered the norm. If anyone questions it, you are attacked! The good ole boys want to keep it lily white for as long as they can. I remarried and moved to Howell from Ann Arbor, biggest mistake of my life. Michigan has some wonderful small towns that are accepting of color, HOWELL is not one of them. The local chamber president yells from the rooftop that Howell is all about diversity, not one time has she stepped up to help those of color deal with the abuse they are getting. That would focus negative attention on Howell, so she continues to bury her head in the sand.

I'm sad to hear of this person's experience. The imperial grand wizard of some such group lived in Howell as recently as a few years ago (last time I kept up with this information). Whether Howell residents by and large support such hate is immaterial. Once word of that association got out, I believe the town has a very negative stigma attached to it. Same thing is happening in Idaho, with a group trying to change the town's image. In both cases, I'd like to think that most people that live there don't support racism. They just had the misfortune of having a well known racist reside in the same town.

I also live in Howell, my husband and I have a multi-racial child we adopted. It has been a nightmare living in this town, we are moving as soon as we are able. My daughter is 16 and attends Howell High, she has been called ever name you can image, she has been spit at, told go back where she came from and on and on and on. The woman you are speaking of that runs the Howell Chamber and anything and everything she can control is not a nice person. After several calls to the police, I went to the diversity club for help, they were useless and wanted me to go away. It is a front, just for show! We now realize it is time to move out of Howell Michigan, it will be the happiest day of my daughters life!

I didn't realize Howell was populated by intolerant, uneducated, backward rednecks. Move away! Come up North! Traverse City is tolerant and welcomes diversity

Peter, funny you said that, I LOVE Traverse City, we have a cottage there and it is on my list of possible places to move.

Yeah, Howell is pretty bad. We knew some people that actually moved to Howell because they were trying to get away from the diversity in other areas. Needless to say we don't associate with them anymore.

But I found that just about anywhere west of 275 can be pretty bad, and the further you go the worse it gets. I still find it alot in the Detroit Metro area and am amazed at how intolerant some people are.

How is this at all relevant to what this person is experiencing in Howell, Michigan?
