Part time Job how does it effect my unemployment Base weeks
Hello, I have a current benefit year about to expire and I have to file a new claim to get any extensions.
I know if I get a part time job how much it reduces my weekly unemployment but how does that effect my claim? Will they file a claim against the new low paying job and deny any extensions?
I get $300 a week now.
The job would pay $160 a week and they will reduce my unemployment by $80. BUT how will it effect my weeks when I refile the claim because my benefit year is up?

I'm in NJ and it may be different here, but after 1 yr, we did not file a new claim, we reactivate the same claim and you should go on to the extensions. If you file a new claim you might get screwed.
IMO, by working PT, your benefit amount (WBR) was established already so your weekly amount goes higher between your pt job and unemployment amount. Although you're getting less from unemployment, total weekly is more and you collect longer. Anyone from Michigan correct me if I'm wrong.

Im getting conflicting answers from the Unemployment office. They told me when my year was up and I filed a new claim it would go against the part time job first and I would get under $100 a week for underemployment instead of getting an extension of my $300.
Im trying to work but cutting me down to that is really ridiculous!

I wish I could help more but NJ is different, I don't want to mislead you.. Maybe someone in Michigan can help but I don't see any replies.

I work part time and receive unemployment and its pretty much worthless to work part time. For me, it takes so much from unemployment and since I don't work that much, its basically losing money for me, so its not really worth it.

Yeah, thats my situation. Not to mention the state screwed me on what quarter they draw my pay from, so I'm getting paid quite a bit less than I should anyhow. And then when I actually go to work, it works out so that I'm penalized for it.

Al, that is the conclusion I have come to and they basically confirmed it when I talked to them.
You lose 50% right off the bat, then you have expenses to get to work like gas, uniforms, equip, whatever.
The worst thing is they use the quarter of LOW wages and so for working your extension is based on part time wages instead of the full time job you lost. I asked them what was the point of working? Also employers are catching on they will be PAYING unemployment to hire you once you file a new claim when your old one runs out so they most wont bother with you if you are collecting. really why should they be charged for hiring us?
