Default moving to Bad Axe

Hello, I will be moving to the small town of Bad Axe, MI in December which is going to be drastically different from Washington, DC where I currently reside. I will be taking a temporary 5 month position at the Huron Medical Center.

I still need to find a place to live and wanted to know if it would be better to rent in an apartment complex or a small house. I can't find anything on the internet.

Wow, have you ever been out here??? Do you know what Michigans thumb is like?? Being that your from DC, I know you are used to all the shopping, restaurants and cultural attractions being near by. Bad Axe is one of the most isolated towns in the whole state of Michigan. Even much of Upper Michgan is closer to services than Bad Axe. From Bad Axe your looking at hours of driving just to get to ANY major town. I think the town may have a wallmart now, so at least the basics are covered. Im not trying to discourage you, but just want you to know what its really like there. On the plus side, its very quiet and the lake is beautiful out toward caseville. Good deer hunting over that way too. If you like isolated you will love Bad Axe. Just be prepared for a major culture shock, there is nothing out east to compare rural Michgian with (especially the thumb area). As for your question about apartments, Im sure there are not many complexes there since its such a small area, so renting a house may be your best bet.

Have you checked the local newspaper (the Huron Daily Tribune) for apartments and houses for rent?

I just moved away from a small town, and I was AMAZED at how few businesses/papers/rentals were on the internet. Word of mouth from the locals is really the most reliable source of information out there. Can you ask the HR department at the hospital to help hook you up with a couple of rental potentials?

The other posters are right, Bad Axe is TINY!! What is the closest "town" out there, is it Caro?

I remember when my dad used to go the Livestock Auction in Bad Axe once in a while. Maybe that would be worth checking out when you get moved in.

Another MI town with a cool name.....

Way back when David Letterman was funny, Bad Axe was the "Home Office" for the Late Nite show.

During your 5 month stay don't forget to visit towns such as:

Hell
Paradise
Christmas
Climax
Kalamazoo
Ishpeming
Escanaba

And become a supporter of the Watersmeet High School Nimrods!
