Nice username, BTW. But I see that in your first 7 posts, all you've done is bash Michigan, so apparently your username is fitting.
Actually it is up to the gov to offer incentives to bring new employers to our state. Do you watch the news??? If current employers are closing their doors then we must rely on a NEW source to create jobs. If we do not offer them some tax incentive or something to spend the money to build a place to employ our workers, then they will not come here.

All I have seen you do in your posts is bash other people for wanting a better quality of life. OUTSIDE OF MI. Whats your deal? I have raised 2 kids in this area and although I have a degree and have been at my current employer for years, I am still pay check to pay check living. I dont like MI. I have spent 15 years trying to make it work here. And after seeing you and a few others bash us for wanting out.. why would I not speak up????

Dear Michigansucks,

Please show me one of my posts bashing someone solely for wanting to move out of the state.

While you're doing that, I'll post here a quote from you in a thread you started in the Florida section:

My husband and I are moving our family to the Tampa area by next summer. We currently live in the township of Flint, just outside the city. http://www.city-data.com/city/Flint-Michigan.html. If you can check this site, you will see why we are taking our family and RUNNING to Florida.
I have read alot of these forums, and have to say that Fl looks like paradise in comparison.
There are NO jobs here. And I dont mean in the Flint area in general, I mean the whole state. Our wonderful Gov. is praising herself to no end that in the 5 years she has been Gov. ONE company opened a "headquarters" here and created 300 jobs! WOW... and the people are so "smart" they put her back in office after using that data to run her campaign! Now that the Auto Industry has fallen apart here, teenagers cannot even get summer jobs at a fast food place! All the adults have taken even those jobs trying to make ends meet. The only industry left is healthcare.. we have alot of that. But without jobs.. no insurance.. less helthcare jobs later too! And the Upper_P what a joke! Half that part of the state carries only seasonal jobs sinse the snow is so overwhelming most everything closes except for snow mobiling!

Thanks.

*Sigh* Oh, where do I even start...

First of all, misucks, great screen name. It makes it obvious that your posts will be totally unbiased, and free of sweeping generalizations about our great state.

You are completely entitled to your opinion, and it's understood by all of us that times are tough in Michigan. No one is stating that it is not. But there are some positives, and it gets very difficult to constantly see posts that completely throw the entire state of Michigan into the gutter. While we know that things are hard, your particular situation and feelings about Michigan are not everyone else's situation and feelings. We only ask you keep that in mind!

Magellan has never, that I am aware, jumped all over someone simply because they posted that they are leaving because times are tough. He has, as have I, gotten defensive and retaliated verbally when (many) posters have made across the board generalizations and stated absolute untruths about this state. It just gets old.

P.S. This thread is called Michigan Looking Up. There are at least 2 other threads that are for posting about leaving the state. Those threads are where those of like mind with yourself post. This thread is for those who care to post something constuctive and positive about this state. You are welcome on any and all threads, but please stay on topic.

Default This Summer

Just wanted to comment in a semi-positive thread about the summer so far. The weather has been spectacular! Lots of sun and blue skies. Just what Michigan summers are all about. It just verifies my enthusiasm for living in this state. Yeah, the naysayers may say, come back in February and post about the weather. Well, it isn't February, it's July in Michigan and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. I sure wouldn't want to be in Texas, Florida or any other over-heated state right now.

No kidding. That week and a half where it was over 90 here in GR, I had had enough. Who can take 3 months of that? I'm sure people adjust, but I hate being sweaty when I'm not TRYING to sweat (exercising). And I'm not at all overweight. I can't even imagine.

I have to say.... You can't seriously think that posting a topic such as this is not going to invite (read: beg) negative feedback. There are far too many Michigan residents struggling just to keep the homes they have worked so hard for. In my circle of friends alone 5 of the breadwinners have lost their jobs, my husband included. We are not old, but unfortunately not young enough to be valuable to most employers. (50-55 yoa)

You have to understand peoples frustration with the current downturn. The powers that be in the auto industry and our illustrious politicians knew for years that Michigan was in danger and they just went merrily on their way. Now, with the auto plants closing, laying off etc... it has affected our whole economic base, right down to retail etc... Bringing in a few IT jobs, and other technical jobs is not going to put all those auto workers in a job.

After my husband lost his job, he had 6 months severence, we were pretty confident he would find another job before the severence ran out, he didn't. He collected unemployment, we cut out every bit of fluff spending we could, ended up having to use our retirement savings to survive, we refi-ed our home that only had 8 years to payoff, back to a 30 year mortgage to lower the note to an affordable amount. We basically are back to where we were 30 years ago! And have no idea what we will do in our really old age!

You can't blame people for their frustation, in this case the grass really is greener on the other side of the fence.

Here's some good news: The _Muskegon Chronicle_ reports double-digit increases in new small businesses in several W. Michigan counties. Necessity is the mother invention. Some people who can't find jobs make their own and hire themselves. It's risky, but it works for some.

This reminds me of an acquaintance of mind who was in trouble throughout his youth and finally did time on a minor drug charge. When he got out, he got custody of his daughter (imagine what the mother was like if this guy got the kid!) and that inspired him to change his life. He had no education beyond high school, but he started mowing lawns for a living, and managed to build up a lanscaping business. Last I heard, he had a couple of employees, and had bought a house (in Ypsilanti, I think), and was dating a UM grad student.
