Default Hi there

Hey there! I am not from battlecreek but I have been there a few times. I am from farther north in the Petoskey Area. Do they still have the cereal factories there?

Default Info?

We are thinkng of moving to the Jericho Road area of BC - does anybody know the area? How is the crime rate etc? I am from the Uk and my wife has lived there before, a few years ago, so I was wanting to get a heads up, so to speak. We also have 3rd grade daughter so school info would be good. Any thoughts?

Oh, honey--do NOT move to Jericho Rd. Bad crime area, not a good school for your daughter. I lived on Post Ave some years back and know the area well. Once--long ago--that was a nice area of town but now there are a lot of crack houses and crime is rampant. There are still good people there, but they seem to feel hopeless as they watch their community go down the tubes. My last friend in that neighborhood moved out several years ago because there was so much violence and distraction in the school that he feared for his kids. There were also lots of B&Es in the neighborhood, vandalism of cars & houses, etc.

If you have time before making your move, here's a suggestion: get a map of BC (print one out from your computer or write to the chamber of commerce and have them send a nice one), then check the local crime report in the BC paper online every day. Mark the locations of the crimes you read about in the paper with a colored marker each day. After a few months, you'll have a pretty good idea of where crime is concentrated. You could even color code--red marker for violent or drug crimes, blue for B&Es & theft, etc..

Here's where to find the daily crime reports: http://www.battlecreekenquirer.com/a...701220309/1002

If you have been tempted by low real estate prices on Jericho, the perilous nature of the area is the explanation. I would steer you toward a neighborhood that feeds into either Harper Creek High School or Lakeview High School. I, myself, went to Battle Creek Central and can't say much about it now, pro or con, as I don't know any kids who have gone there in recent years. But if you do get into the BC Central area, do some more research on neighborhoods and the elementary schools (the one I went to is hovering on the edge of closing). There are lots of better BC neighborhoods than the "Post Addition," or "Postumville," which are old names for area that includes Jericho.

Good luck. Let me know if I can be of any further help. I have not lived in BC for many years, but my family is all still there and I go there frequently to visit.

Not entirely sure where Jericho Rd. is but if it's downtown BC, I'd say avoid it. BC Central school hasn't been in the news lately, if that's a positive. Lakeview has a new high school, as does Harper Creek. Both very acceptable IMO.

Cereal factories are still here. Was in downtown yesterday at the Y and it smelled tasty LOL

Default I wouldn't,

I lived in Battle Creek for many years, it is crime infested little townwith a lot of druggies, I moved away in '94 and never looked back. There just isn't much there. Just look at the police blotter at the enquirer and news website, for a town of 40,000 there is crime everyday, regularly.

They have a fantastic YMCA in BC, I used to work there. Then they contracted me out to work at Kellogg, which was AWESOME! I moved away a few yrs ago, and still miss shopping at Horrocks!

I have lived in BC my entire life and want to leave as soon as I can. My advice: Do not live here unless you have to. The city is full of dilapitated houses, drugs, shootings and prostitutes. The inner city is the worse, especially the downtown area. The Post Addition is covered with garbage and weed-infested lots. Downton business district is ok, but the neighborhoods surrounding it are rat-infested drug/hooker havens whe rmost of the gun slayings have been.Battle Creek used to be a nice place, but now it is known as Little Detroit. MAny drug dealers have set up shop in BC because it's beyween Gary/Chicago and Detroit. In BC it is easy for a drug lord to buy a foreclosed home for $7,000 and run operations from there. Johns do the same an run brothels. The BCPD generally ignores these problems and instead they focus on people speeding 35 mph in a 30. I have several friends who have been given tickets in N.E. Capital for going 5 over the limit. While the cop issued a ticket my friends witnessed prostitutes working the area without being bothered by the police. In short - Stay away from the Ghetto ity of Battle Creek a.k.a. Little Detroit.
