Moving to Michigan
I am moving to Michigan in December from San Antonio, TX. Should I choose to attend school in Rochester, Lansing, or Grand Rapids? I will be moving alone, so would like some place safe. Not into the party or club scene, so nightlife does not matter to me.

I can't answer your questions, since I'm about to move to MI, too. But I am excited to see another TEXAN moving to MI!
I take it you are going to college in MI? Brace yourself...there is NO MEXICAN FOOD in Michigan. And if someone tells you "there's a great place over at XXXXX"...don't buy it. It's still not the same! I'm brushing up on my salsa recipes, and my enchilada making abilities right now as we speak!
Good luck!

Yes, this move is for school. Are you moving for school to?

You're nuts, there is some Mexican food in Michigan, some good Mexican food. Go to Mexicantown in Detroit off of Bagley street. You'll get some good authentic Mexican food prepared and served up by Mexicans. They have great food there.

which schools are you looking at?
I lived in Grand Rapids for 3 years, I am not much of a city person but still seemed to have a lot of fun. I really was NOT satisfied with GVSU, if thats where you are looking to attend, (don't want to offend anyone, just my opinion). If you are looking at the Community College, I have only heard good things.
I know a lot of people that lived in Lansing, all seem to like it. If you don't want the party scene, I would advise against East Lansing.

Why do you have to be so nasty? I don't think I'm nuts, I just think I know good Mexican food. And yes, we did go to Mexicantown and it was good. But let's be realistic here...I have two small children. If I want to go and get a good Mexican fix for lunch or dinner, I'm not going to run over to Mexicantown to get it. Understand that, we're used to having a kick a** Mex restaurant on just about every corner, where we're from. That's just not the case in MI.

No, I'm moving there with my family. My husband got a promotion with his company, which also included a relocation to Michigan!
Are you going to grad school or undergrad? And why Michigan...nothing wrong with it, I'm just curious! There aren't many Texans up there!

If you want the "college experience," probably MSU. If you're in grad school or don't need the college scene, I would choose Oakland U. Despite all the bashing of Metro Detroit, the opportunity to make connections and have diverse experiences will be greater in a larger metropolitan area. If you're talking about GVSU, I believe your experience will be a bit more insular, which is fine if the culture of that area is for you and/or you're committed to staying in western Michigan. Overall, they are quite different schools and it's ultimately what you want to get out of your experience that will determine the *best* choice.

I am going to be attending Thomas M. Cooley Law School. With that information, any further advice about which is the better city. Thanks for all of your information.

Where is Thomas M. Cooley Law School (again, forgive the ignorant Texan here)? Where did you go to undergrad?
