Well, I am from Flint and will be moving to Chicago in about 4 days. I love the city, I'm going to grad school there, I've got a lovely apartment and some job interviews lined up, and I'm not so far away that I can't hop on a train and be near my family in a matter of hours (of course, when I lived in Florida, I could hop on a plane and be home in 2 hours, but sometimes plane trips can be too costly for me...and the bus ride is horrendously long. 30 hours!)

I moved to dallas last year after graduating from u of m engineering. I had a lot of job offers from detroit firms but most of my friends and family had already left the state because of the the poor economy. I am also not going to miss the winter weather and the domestic cars. When I came to dallas almost everybody was driving imports, which was new for me. I will miss the tigers, red wings and wolverines. The weird thing is that most of the people I knew in detroit have already left so there is nothing to go back to, my parents are retired and living in warmer climates. My friends are living outside of detroit and my brothers and sister are as well. It is said that detroit and michigan are in a permanent recession.

Housing sales are up everywhere from last year except in the West. Prices are down, but sales are up. economists say that does nto mean much yet. the crunch will not end until the end of this year at the earliest. However if the West remains in decline while other areas are flattening out, you may see a longer decline in that area. I know that southern california has a massive oversupply of houses. They will not be building many residential project for quite a while. It may be a good area to avoid.

we're planning on moving to Clearwater Florida in the next few years (once the kids get out of college) I lived in MIchigan all my life and love to hunt and fish and race snowmobiles, camping, but I've had it with this state! Seems most things this states goverment does is so #ssbackwards it not even funny. From the DNR to the govenor. The weather doesn't help much either.
The new state slogin: Will the last person leaving Michigan, please turn out the lights! |

I'm moving out to Miami for undergrad.. I don't know where I'll end up for dental school and I don't have a clue if I'll ever come back to Grand Rapids or not... its really not that bad of a place I guess.. just not for me right now.

It's sad to see so many people moving out of Michigan. With some of the economic reports coming out I can't entirely say I blame someone for moving to greener pastures in another state. Good luck to everyone who is moving (and those who stay)! |

I had to chuckle when I read the OP. I am an Electrician and am coming back home to Michigan. Don't know the OP's background or anything, but for me it is a wide open field. 26 years experience, up to date on the latest training, A WIDE range in the field itself, and associated fields as well. That is the key to doing work like this. KEEP LEARNING! Once you stop expanding your field of knowledge, there is somebody waiting in the wings to take your place.
For me, I am coming back to West Michigan. This time they are going to plant me there when I die. I have traveled all over the country, lived in all the different regions, and have come to the conclusion there is no place that is better suited for me and my family than West Michigan. I have been there recently, and have lived there recently so I do know what is going on in the state. |

I dont consider it abandoning my state. Been here 40 years and my family and children are number one priority. With no jobs to support them, roof over their heads, college expectations etc.. It's time to go. Most importantly to provide for them, better weather, cost of living on and on.. Good luck with the roads, and Michigan has talekd or tourism for years. Not going to happen.

I have lived in michigan for almost all my life, I love it here, but like everyone else. I have my family to think about. I'm so tired of always getting shut off notices and being behind on rent and always worring where the next meal is coming from, so we have finally desided to move. We have done all the looking into states and the best we found was Idaho, Boise seems to be the best. So by the end of the summer we will be moving out there. They have plenty of jobs (I seen some in your field listed under the jobs on carrer builders). The cost of living seems to be cheaper than us, some of it the same, but it looks and seems really awesome out there. I wish you and yours the best of luck no matter where you go or what you do. But if I were you I'd be checking out west, salt lake city, ut is an awesome place as well.

I'm part of the "I hate to move but..." crowd.
When I graduated with my teaching degree a year ago, I tried searching and came up with nothing. After subbing in GR for a year I was planning on leaving the state with the first job offer I got, but then I found out that I"m a semester away from getting an English teaching minor (I'm currently history). So I'm going back to school to diversify my degree. At least it buys me a little more time till December. I was dreading leaving MI, and every out of state resume I packaged was gut wrenching, because I knew I'd get a job offer, but I knew it was what I should do. After I get my English certification I still will probably have to leave MI, if anything, to start my career. But as soon as I can, I'm coming back. Of course, if I got a job in MI (not counting on it) I'll be able to enjoy the cool summer breezes, pine forests, snowy winters, and of course, my family and friends |
