I moved out of Michigan last year, unfortunately I can't see my self moving back. I do love Michigan but I love where I live now, there is a lot to do here, I make a ton of money, there aren't fat ugly lazy smokers everywhere and the city isn't a giant ghetto like the one that I came from. When you finally do get out and see that there is life outside of Michigan it sure is an eye opener.

When I left I thought of the day I would return to Grand Rapids. My intentions of returning were accompanied with thoughts to continue the effort to make this city and state its best. What kind of person would I be to not help shape it for the better? I've already started in what capacity I can. This feeling has only become more passionate. There is so much enthusiasm and promise that you want to help it continue to be great. There's too much at stake to let it go. I won't apologize if my message sounds idealistic. Idealistic I am. Michigan needs more idealism. It's a genuine symptom of a person so attached to where he is from. |

Oh, sorry. I forgot.
There are actually 4 kinds of people who post here. The fourth being those who have left the state and claim to be wallowing in happiness, yet somehow find the time (and inclination) to return to the Michigan forum for a few more kicks. Listen, I'm all for getting out there and living in as many places as you possibly can. This country is like a candy store. All I'm asking is that once you leave you take your Sour Warheads with you. Extreme Sour Warheads, each |

My whole life is in Michigan. But we are seriously looking in to relocating if my husband gets laid off again (he was laid off for 6 months). We already lost our health insurance (we have 3 small children) and they raised our taxes here (GREAT TIMING!) so we really can't afford to live here anymore even if we wanted to. We're in so much debt it's unreal. We did receive a federal grant and my husband will be returning to school this fall. Hopefully it all works out. But bashing people for wanting to leave their "homeland" in Michigan and live else where is just ridiculuos. Thank about it, unless you are 100% Indian, you technically aren't from here. All of you were born cause people came to this country for a better life. There is NOTHING wrong with relocating for a better life. That is how this country came into existence after all. Taking risks for a better life is what America is/was all about.

Thanks to all who have replied (the good ones and the bad ones). It has been very helpful for me and my family to make the desicion to move from the state my wife and I where born in. I accepted a job in Tennessee and as soon as soon as the forecloser and bankrupcy is complete we'll be on are way. (My house appraised for 148,000 three years ago and I can't sell it for what we owe, about 40,000 less, its been on the market since Feb., and its located in Fenton which is a very nice place to live except for the economy). For those who are still doing well here, hopefully you have nothing to do with the auto industry, because its not going to last (no more 30-40 dollar an hour jobs for sitting at the bar). I think the eastern city's of Mi have been hit the hardest because of GM, and some other parts of the state aren't as affected. But everybody will eventually feel at least a little pinch, until the state does something to bring in more jobs, like the casinos they've been talking about building in Flint. (MI the next Las Vegas?) But regardless of your opinion about this subject (good or bad) I say good luck to you all and God Bless. Thanx

I am a native of the Grand Rapids area, but have lived in Florida for a very long time. I see several posts on here about people wanting to move down here, but I would strongly advise you to do your homework. Yes, there are jobs that pay very well, especially in the medical profession. There are some areas of Florida that pay much better than others too. However, the cost of living has absolutely SKYROCKETED in the past few years - it's beyond belief. The crime rate (especially Orlando and its surrounding areas) is very high, and we are seriously overcrowded. I wouldn't tell anyone never to come here, but be prepared for a culture shock.
As for Michigan, I've still got lots of family there and have considered a move back, and while I know the economy there is in tough shape, it all depends on the industry you're in and the area you want to be in. Just my two cents . . . |

I can't help compare what we have here in MI to the famines of the Old Testament. When there was not enough food to go around, it was time to move on. (This is drastically understating the immense plans that God was carrying out, of course...). It seems if there are not enough jobs in MI to go around, that those who leave, basically leave greater opportunity behind for those who remain. If there are not enough jobs to give each one of us a living, what other responsible choice remains, but for some to move to a more active economy? Why stone those who are leaving? Does this not create less competition for the few jobs that ARE here? I've lived here all my life, my sisters are here, my daughter, my precious grandbabies... Leaving is going to tear my heart out, but the alternative is to become part of the problem by staying, instead of creating a solution for ourselves and going where there are more stable opportunities. Why is this so bad? JMHO

I am a recent college grad and I am moving because I am a journalism major and am having a really hard time finding a job here. pretty much, J jobs are nonexistant. I guess my major doesn't match up with job availablity here.
![]() I don't want to leave. I'm pretty much leaving all of my family, friends, boyfriend, etc. Don't know exactly where I'm moving, yet ... pretty much out West seems to be best for finding J jobs. Plus, I lived out in Spokane, Wash. for an internship, and it was pretty tolerable out there. I'll miss Detroit. It sucks that there are no jobs for my field. |
