I guess like anywhere there is less crime in rural areas versus the big cities. Michigan is no exception to that. I like Traverse City and the surrounding areas.

If you can find work up there, I'd definitely go north of Muskegon or Grand Rapids. If you are not looking for work and retiring, i'd definitely check out Traverse City, Charlevoix, Petoskey areas. They are all very nice summertime recreation areas.

What area do you want to be in? What amenities? Do you mind being buried in snow? Do you want to be far away from anyone? Do you want to be near cities?

There are only a handful of cities in Michigan where you truely have to worry about your safety. Much of Michigan is relatively safe in regards to someone harming you.

Almost any small town in the state would be safe. Most suburbs around Grand Rapids or Detroit would be safe as well. Places that are truley dangerous would be Detroit, Saginaw, Benton harbor, Flint, Pontiac, parts of Lansing, parts of Grand Rapids, parts of Bay City. Michigan is a very safe state if you avoid those places.
