Maybe it's because I'm a Yooper but, I've always found it a paradox that the demographics similar to ours, throughout the country are mostly Republican. Part of it here may be down to the labor union history. It can be understood if understanding the history and formation of societies in the UP.

We had business connections and E-Commerce BEFORE a majority of the LP knew what broadband was. The major industries in the Upper Peninsula are not outhouse repair or campground maintenance. We DO in fact have paved roadways here and we actually have a lower unemployment rate with quality jobs available to those who are qualified than the lower peninsula can offer. We offer a vast array of technologically oriented environments as well as pristine natural beauty. The UP is FAR from a throwback to 'Somewhere in Time’ and - to be quite frank – ‘Escanaba in da Moonlight’ is little more than a ridiculous attempt by another hapless troll to poke fun at the residents of the UP. Don't expect Little House on the Prairie if you do relocate - it's not an escape destination – rather, it’s a move that will change your perspective and must not be romanticized. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is not a frontier wasteland – when will they ever learn THAT? 
I agree with you 100%. There are jobs everywhere if you're willing to look and willing to adapt. Looking online at Marquette jobs, I saw quite a few to get my by while my private business is taking off. A good job is all in the planning and I believe you have to move to the U.P. BEFORE you get a job because as an outsider you will have a hard time getting emloyers to even look at your resume. And this is for all of you not from the UP - you have to be tough. If you're that than you'll fit right into things!

Can anyone give me some insight on living in the Marquette area? People, Activities, Culture, Housing, Cost of Living... and at what point on the calendar would one typically have to drive a snowmobile to work?

Thanks!
I live in Marquette. Just wanted to say that the prices here for houses and rentals are ridiculous! Negaunee is only 9 minutes to the west and the prices are about half what they are here. Just food for thought.
Also anything you can think of to do outdoors is all around us, Marquette for being a small city (by LP standards) has a tremendous amount of culture, and here it is towards the end of January and we only have about 2 inches or so of snow on the ground (granted there is more if you go inland).

WHOA!!!!!!!! Did you actually read my post or just look for a way to attack.

I love the U.P. And yes they do have modern conveniences and some of the finest culture there is in the state. Ironwood is a prime example of that. When I talk of stepping back in time 60 years I am talking about the attitude of people (except for you of course)and the laid back way of life. There is not the hustle and bustle of the trolls below the bridge, most people are far more friendly and are always willing to pitch in and help a neighbor in need. People are not worried about impressing anyone.

I don't believe I mentioned anything about half the crap you accused me of.

Your attitude would work great in the Detroit area.
