Smile North Carolina or Bust!

My family and I are contemplating a move to the Raleigh, NC area this summer. We have two sons - 13 and 10 - and I am wondering if anyone else from MI is headed that way. My husband is an electrician and can't find a job here and I just graduated in education and can't see myself subbing for a year (or more) before finding work, especially without insurance benefits - hmm, story sound familiar? I've read so many postings of people who can't find work here in MI (no matter what their field)

We will be sad to leave our friends and family - this is the only home that my kids and I have ever known. My husband traveled with the military before we were married. My kids are nervous, but anxious about the move. Any tips or suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks bunches!!

Best wishes for You and your family! I have family down in Raleigh, and I visit there a few times a year. It's beautiful and has been booming since the early 90's. If I ever had to move that would be the place. Good Luck!

This is where your full of shi^. Individual Walmarts and Home Depots are basically recession proof b/c they are international chains that sell basic commodities. As long as the entire company is doing well, and there's a population around a store, they'll continue to do brisk business in any state. Last time I checked, there are still millions of people in MI who need to buy shampoo and lightbulbs. FWIW, both Home Depots in my area are hiring and they are filled with people at all hours, just like all the local Walmarts, Targets, and Costco I've been to. Go to a local Costco in Metro Detroit - lines for gas are 10 deep at each pump. So this means that people are willing to wait a bit longer to get cheaper gas - big whup - times aren't as fat as they used to be and people are bit more thrifty - that's good. But I guess these must be phantom people. Take your bullshi^ and take it someplace else that needs it.

You're right about one thing. The babies have left Michigan leaving the adults to clean up the mess and move forward. Unfortunately most of those babies can't resist returning to this forum and whinning up a storm. It is so obvious that most of them regret moving and are now simply lashing out as a result of their mistake.
Meanwhile, like you said. I'm soaking in the warm, cozy bathwater of Michigan, where not one of my friends is unemployed, no one has any intention of leaving and all are looking positively toward the future. And if you think they must all be rich your deluding yourself. I'm not denying that Michigan hasn't seen better days or that people aren't hurting, but these apocolyptic terms you people use to describe Michigan are more reflective of yourselves than the state. "Black hole, Dead, Doomed" Wow. I'll bet even Columbus didn't hear all those zingers.
Life Lesson of the Day:
Doors of opportunity will NEVER open for people who wallow in pity like some on this forum do. Doors of opportunity will ALWAYS open for those who get out there and project a possitive, get things done attitude. It's just a fact. One that sadly, a few of you will never buy into.

Sure there are jobs in michigan, but not a growth of employment, and even entry level jobs are hard to find. I have people who are looking at wal mart and home depot and theya re not hiring. Jammi - did this electrician that you know move? If so where??

We are in no way "giving" up on Michigan as others have indicated, however with that said, I feel that we need to give our children a better future and a better opportunity. We are not "cutting" ties, as all of our family is here and will be back often to visit (this will always be home).

Cato, I see this state in distress, No it's not the "doom and Gloomer's" just posting for the fun of it! I respect your view's and other's but, Michigan is in a serious change. Look, most people that post here are, negetive, maybe for a reason. In my life it's not just the New's or media that is reporting the decline here in S.E. michigan, It's real people, friends, family leaving! The whole "stick it out and make a change" Come on, Detroit has'nt changed since I was born in 69. This area is in real trouble, and real people are expressing their real life storie's. I've been reading this forum for awhile now, Michigan is history in the making, a preview to what's to come to the rest of the US, with all the sub-prime loans and over sea's out sorceing. Also, Moderator's should not shut down "old theads" becuase, It's been "beatin to death". That really show's some bias. Instead If Cato's right,(which I hope he is) let's see how things pan out. I've lived through a michigan in recession before, 70's,80's 90's but now the rule's have changed. It will interesting to see the outcome. I will always love this state, but the future is scary to say the least. Either way, I will alway's be a Michigander.

I am also in education and have been subbing for a year and a half (4-5 days a week). I also keep another full time job at a Kroger store doing customer service, which gives me benefits. In my case, I don't use the benefits (I can stay on my dad's until March when I turn 25), but I do have $30000 in loans to pay off. Kroger pays my regular bills, Subbing is getting me out of debt. But, I am exhausted! Therefore, I will likely be moving to NC in about 6 weeks (as long as I get the job-I interviewed Friday). But, I am going towards Charlotte.
There are tons of teaching jobs state-wide in NC. Check teachers-teachers.com to start!

Absolutely right on target, Wabbit. It's starting to become laughable how predictable the Chicken Little posts are becoming - 2nd grade spelling/grammar and all, lol.

Personally I'd caution you to make such a move with having two kids. I say this from experience of having not lived around family yet with my two little kids. It's important for kids to be around extended family so they can build those relationships. As soon as the honeymoon period wears off from the move you will wonder "now what" because you are sitting in a place where you don't have any family. Then you'll be on the phone all the time trying make up for lost time spent with family. You'll miss holidays with them, birthdays, etc. And you have to ask yourself what you are teaching your kids about the importance of family if you are willing to up and leave them all. I'd stick it out, make it work and show them that it can be done. Just think, if you do this some day you may be left as they pick up and move away, then your grandchildren may live a thousand or more miles away.

Bottom line is that the grass is not always greener.
