I go to the va hosptal in loma linda, ca & receive travel pay (.41 cents a mile) & am paid in cash. As of 3/1/11 a checked will be mailed to all that request & are eligable for travel pay. The va says it will take up to 14 days to receive the check. ALL cash payments will cease. For those who receive travel pay by check via mail whats the avg wait time till you get the check ? I realy liked the cash payment cause i could put in gas to feed my gas guzzler after my appt.

Maybe that's just at that particular hospital as I haven't heard anything about that here in Texas.

In any case, just be thankful you get it. Who else gets PAID to go to the doctor?

Things are going to change again, cash benefits will either be direct deposited or put on a debit card. No cash, no checks.

Of course, this is government, don't expect it next week.

I used to pay out travel pay when I worked for the VA in western NY. Back then (2010 and before) we paid cash on the spot. There was a lot of fraud (veterans riding together and each claiming travel pay, people changing their address and claiming travel pay, people lying on their means tests and claiming travel pay) back then. Since then I hope that it's calmed down, I don't deal with travel pay any more thankfully. People should be thankful, especially in these economic times, that they get paid anything to go to their appointments. And yes, I am a veteran myself.

I dealt with a lot of this at the medical center when I used to work there. The system was BOMBARDED with fraud. I would have certain individuals visit the clinic 2 or 3 times a week, and try to get the visit service connected. People were listing a distant address with a relative, when we knew they were living right down the street. It was a nice benefit, until people abused it. I wouldn't count on this benefit on being there forever either, just as a heads up.

Nothing is forever & it has calmed down alot. Travel pay (if any) is based on your income & many get a small amount.
