Reinstating the Draft?
Will it ever happen? Is it possible the the selective service will actually be used for the draft someday in the future?

There doesn't appear to be a need for it at present.
Always a possibility in the future.

The only way I can see this happening is if China decides to quit stocking our Walmart and Target shelves with all the goods we've come to know and love. This, of course, would lead to the outbreak of WWIII and we would certainly need to use the draft to combat their overwhelming manpower.

I'm surprised we don't have a draft. Not just for military, but for other menial government jobs as well.

Naw, we don't need a draft for either. The military is entering an era of downsizing, and there are already too many worthless government employees out there. Fire one, and three spring up to replace him.

I think there should be a period of mandatory civil service of 2-3 yrs following high school for purely social reasons. Even a Starship Trooper-esque (book, not movie) thing would be cool. It would never happen, or rather something catastrophic would have to happen for it to happen. So though, I'd like it, I don't want it.
I believe it would be beneficial in creating a better understanding, investment/ownership, and appreciation of the Government and military.

Serving in the military is not a "menial government job".

Amen..... Serving in the armed forces is one of the most important jobs a person could have.....
As for the draft being reinstated, it is a possibility if war were to break out on a massive scale again. Barring a WWIII scenario, I'm not holding my breath.....
