My father was Regular Army officer many years ago. we were among the first families sent to Japan in 1946. He died in 1975.

I recently found a medal which was not with all his old military things. It is in a black box with what i believe is Japanese writing on it and the medal itself has Japanese writing on it. How can I learn what this medal was for?

Many thanks.

Take a picture of the medal and everything on the box, display it on the internet so some people who read Japanese can read it. Or take it somewhere where someone who can read Japanese may be able to tell you what it says.

There are probably thousands of medals which have been issued. To give you an idea, look at these pages: Google Search - Images - Japanese Medals
