I have someone that was close who passed away in 2006 due to the disease. He was a PHD pharmaceutical chemist and was never in the military. He was 63 and a father of 3 (adult) children.

Not just people in the military get ALS, it's not that simple, ALS knows no race, no profession, it doesn't discriminate on who it chooses to torture.

ALSA was successful at getting the military to recognize ALS as a service related illness, without question, simply due to the. High volumes of vets with the disease. You could have served only in the states at peacetime & still qualify for benefits. This is a blessing. With this. Benefit is $60k to remodel your home for the ALs patient, I believe it's $30K towards a handicap equipped vehicle, monthly cash benefits for you & family, death benefits, hospice & VA medical services...the list is amazing on what they receive. This benefit made my brother's last 6mo very happy & comfortable (as one can be with this disease).
