Do you wish to be a backup responder for local emergencies or be in a direct combat unit as opposed to combat and service support. If so then in general the Army National Guard has more openings then the Army Reserves

It depends on you... I suggest you go talk to some Guard and Reserve recruiters... These websites should help you understand the difference:

AF has Combat Truckers and they're a very proud bunch! The Air Force Guard unit i was in had all vehical maintenance.
My advice is: DO NOT GO RESERVE FIRST. GO ACTIVE. By the time you get through basic, then career training, you're pretty far along. You can always go reserve after active. Not always the other way around.

BTW, Marines are best. oooh-rah!
