Has anyone recently been stationed or is currently living near by?

My tech school is there and my unit is PCSing me there for about 6 months.

My dilema is that I will have to pay my mortgage where I am currently living and have to pay for lodging out of my own pocket (no pier diem) for billeting there.

Does anyone know of any cheap places to stay? I know for sure i'll be looking into shared housing or something to that affect or check to see if billeting has cheap monthly rates.

As far as housing is concerned does anyone recommend places to stay away from or places that would be ideal (close to base, shopping, entertainment, etc).

Any must do's while i'm down there?

Thanks in advance.

Im tentatively supposed to report early April 2012.

Why wouldn't they pay you BAH for housing and per diem? That doesn't make sense? Also r you guard or reserves?

That doesn't make sense. If you have a house at your home station, and you are going back there, this should be considered a TDY as opposed to a PCS. And you should be getting per diem which would cover your billeting expenses.

Unless things have changed, anything over 180 days has to be a PCS (Unless it is TDY at multiple different locations).

I'm in the Air Guard, and believe me I agree it doesnt make sense. However, the regs for the Guard is anything over 139 days is considered a PCS. Luckily I have about 240 hours of military leave that I can use that will kinda off set however much i'll spend on billeting; not enough because I get paid more in my civilian job than with my military pay (E5) and 240 hours will only really cover 6 weeks of the 6months im gone. But it's alright; just have to make the best with what I have to work with.

If it's a pcs move then you should receive BAH at the rate for Keesler and provide moving expenses. When I went to Keelser for the guard they paid me BAH. Also what Tech school are you going to, you can test out of some areas.
