I hope you don't mind me asking a question on this forum but i figured it to be the best place to ask.
After 22 years in the British Army i'm now going to be living in Pittsburgh as i've managed to find a very good job there. On Veterans Day (Rememberance Day we call it in the UK) on Nov 11, i would very much like to pay my respects at a war memorial to my fallen friends and allies. I'd like to do this in uniform.
Do you feel this would present a problem or be inappropriate?
I hope this hasn't caused any offence to anyone as you all have nothing but my respect.
Shouldn't be at all, get with your local vfw or american legions hall and explain your situation. Many of us served with Nato personal when we were stationed in Europe.
Wearing your uniform would not present a problem or be inappropriate. Sometimes you might get some questions of the country, but I have seen foreign military at our Veterans Day events.
I took this picture in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Veterans Day, November 11, 2009. I did not get a chance to get up to him and
talk. I am not going embarrass myself by trying to guess Country or Service:
Since you are a retired member of the armed forces of our closest ally, this isn't a problem at all. Everytime I have deployed, I have served with British soldiers. If you are good enough to spill blood with us, you are good enough to wear your uniform wherever you want in our country. Welcome to the U.S. and thank you for your service.
The British armed forces are very well respected in this country. Expect a few questions and a lot of handshakes and "thank you's". This is the furthest thing from offensive that I could think of.
Slartibarfast, just a few thoughts. I agree w/the others about the respect you should expect if in uniform at a Veteran's day/Memorial day/ etc ceremony ...Now that being said, I'll assume you've been to the "States" since you've got a job waiting. Well, please remember, the U.S. is a big country geographically, and very diverse. It's been my experience, that people's interest/caring in military oriented days of rememberance/ military history run the gamut. From guys(prior military) like me who are not only very "into" the honoring of Veterans but are military history buffs as well(just ask my wife!...lol.). The other extreme...people who could care less about these special days. People who couldn't give you more than a fact or two about...say...WW2. Feel free to stop back here in November..let us know how things went. This is also a good stopping point if you need some ..cheap...advice about ANYTHING U.S. We'll get pointed in the right direction.......
I would be honoured to walk alongside you in a parade.
