One other thing, tell him to do everything in his power to avoid getting stationed on a buoy tender or an ice breaker.

I think this is great advice, he needs to make sure he is trained in something that can get him a job easily in the future, should he decide not to stay in the Coast Guard.

Getting in the CG is definitely not easy, but if he manages to do it, its a great way to start your career. I wish him the best of lucks!

Thanks to all of you for all the responses.

I know that he is looking at the training he can get while he is IN the Coast Guard, but the fact that he can also go to college AFTER his enlistment is also very appealing to him.

We haven't talked much about it for a week or two but I'll see where he's at with it over the weekend.

I know he was trying to talk a friend of his into enlisting, too, but I don't think he was having much luck.
