While this story may or may not be true in the literal sense, I believe it is true in the spiritual sense. Being a member of the military creates a bond like no other.

I'm not a member of the military, I'm not good enough, (but only for health reasons), but I am from a military family. From how all the people I know in the military, or that have been in the military are, I would expect this could be the case.
