Any chaplains or members out there with experience planning a navy burial? My uncle's ashes will be interred next month at a small private service of just family. I feel there should be a prayer or scripture reading. My sister and I are both layreaders so coming up with something isn't the problem. We wanted to know if there is a prayer or scripture reading traditionally used for navy vets that we could include.

Was he a member of the VFW? Have have a nice ceremony that includes sections about each service [their ceremony can be tailored to only include a specific branch].

I am chaplain at my VFW post.

EXCELLENT advice, Forest Beekeeper! I believe veteran's organizations are overlooked too often when it comes to situations like military funerals.

To my knowledge he did not belong to any veteran organization. There was already a memorial service at his church during the winter. This will be a private, family only, graveside service to inter his ashes on top of my grandmother's grave. My brother will be playing his bagpipe. My sister and I are both layreaders. We have no trouble finding appropriate prayers, but were looking for something for veterans, especially Navy vets.

Can you help us there, forest beekeeper?

I have this on my wall at home.

A Sailor's Prayer

Dear Lord, I'm just a sailor
A protector of our land.
A servant called to battle
When my country takes a stand.
I pray for strength and courage
And a heart that will forgive.
For peace and understanding
In a world for all to live.
My family's prayers are with me.
No matter where I roam.
Please listen when I'm lonely
And return me safely home.
Amen

Or you could end with a traditional Naval farewell

"Fair Winds and Following Seas"

I thank him for his service. May he rest in peace

The traditional phrase is "Sailor, rest your oar".

------
"Oh God, Thy Sea is so great, and my boat is so small"
