A Vietnamese citizen joined the U.S. military in the mid 1970's, at a U.S. military base in Vietnam, and fought for the USA.
After the war, he came here on a visa (military ??)

Could he have began a military career, once he arrived in the USA, and served enough years for military benefts?
How many years of service, is required for retirement and spousal benefits?

Thanks,

Howard555, military pay & benefits are the same for everyone that serves. You may join the U.S. military as a foreign national and your path to U.S. citizenship is somewhat easier. In most cases, you must serve 20 years or more to get retirement benefits.

Have you an instance where this actually happened or did this just come to you one night? A Vietnamese National could not have joined the US Military in Vietnam except in Very special circumstances which would haave required the State Department be involved

Yes, a friend of mine has an Uncle who joined U.S. forces at specific U.S. Air Base in Vietnam, around 1974.
After the war, the military got him to the USA.
Not sure what kind of visa it would have been.
