Bleh...I was there 3.5 years. Absolutely brutal weather and nothing to do. Flat as a pancake and some hostility from the locals.

Minot AFB, ND

Went TDY there and it seemed worse than Grand Forks.
I agree that Minot is pretty bad. I'm surprised by Grand Forks. Not a bad town, in my opinion. UND gives it some college town vibrancy.

Aurora, Colo., was good (Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center, Lawry[SP] AFB) but both those places are gone.
I liked visiting Colorado Springs, but I never went on post. (Ft. Carson).

I think Leavenworth (Ft. Leavenworth) is the most frustrating place to live. So close to Kansas City, but so far away at the same time. Plus the post is located near the less-than-desireable desireable part of town. The strip mall across the street from the main gate gets robbed all the time. The town itself is pretty dull.

And I hate Yuma, Ariz. (Marine Corp Air Station-Yuma, Yuma Proving Ground). Its locals have a pro-military attitude, but it's hotter than hell, and there's nothing to do but get in trouble. The porn shop, though, is near the station.

During my two year tour of the Forks the temperature dropped to 80 below zero...brutal... Iceland and Cold lake Canada was warmer.... The community and residents superb.

See, I was just the opposite. I didn't like San Diego and I still go there on business and dread it, but I do like Coronado atmosphere. I like the laid back MS attitude, the little rednecky atmosphere and such. Same with Pascagoula,MS...not busy, not pushy, just good ol' southern style living.

IMO Fayetteville, NC is as dumpy a town as you can ask for. Strip joints, bars, pawn shops, and lots of dangerous people.

Oceana NAS was nice during my brief time there.
Portsmouth, NH is a nice town, although the shipyard is technically in Maine.

I would try to not get stationed to Minot AFB in North Dakota. Cold as hell (-50 anyone??), middle of no where, very few options for shopping, eating, doctors, flights, anything really and the base itself is nothing special. The redeeming quality is the people. Granted the locals may be bit naive (most have never left the state) but they are usually nice. I am not one for small town feelings, but if that's what you dig, then you may like it.
Eglin AFB had the very finest phone operators in 1991.
In the sandbox, using the MARS phones, we patched through to various AFBs and unfortunately many of the operators were uncaring, bored, and not interested in helping us. Hangups were commonplace.
Eglin was always good, the luck of the draw, the operators there were always professional, kind, and helpful.

another note about san diego, its a big city without a big city feel. you wouldnt think that more than 1.2 mil people live within its city limits,it is so laid back there. i didnt like it there at first either but once i got a car and start to learn my way around i started to like it alot. one thing i didnt like about it is that it is too spread out and you have to have a car out there to really get around. and the thing about Meridian,ms was that the local people were not so friendly to us and they didnt seem like they welcome all people there either. i never ever want to go back there.
