She may not get to choose which specialty she wants.

Now if her dream is to be military, that's another thing.

Regular doctors don't choose their specialty either, they go through a process called "Match Day" and many don't "match" to what they want. It's a national day, national registry, all medical schools, all residencies.

Since you refer to the person as a "child" I would guess that he or she would change his mind a dozen times before reaching the age of decision.

Good information.

Only the person looking to go to medical school can know what the tradeoffs are and if they are worth it. Medical school following 4 years of college leaves one with huge debt and it is only getting worse. I know several people who have gone through medical and dental schools paid for by the military and are very happy they did it. In fact they are all still in the service. On the other hand with a 'child' in the service who wanted to be there I'm not fond of the 'in it for benefits and out' kind of person.

Both the above statements highlighted in red for the person in the military and this misinterpretation of Match Day are both not quite true. The military doesn't limit choices, other than some of the places of residency, although the branch may "encourage" some fields more than others. Match Day for them as well as civilians does not determine what the future doctor will practice!! It is a "match" between someone's 1st, or 2nd, or 3rd. or 4th...(and so on)... choice and the choices of the programs offering residencies to accept them. Top students usually get their first or second choice, so they will most certainly be in their first choice of field to practice medicine in. Match Day has been around since the 50s and people have usually been able to get into the specialties they want if they are in the upper half of their class and fairly often in the bottom half. Those that either did not do well because they picked a very competitive program or were limiting choices to certain geographical areas sometimes have not been "matched" with a residency program and enter a "Scramble" day where they have to find a program that still has openings and often may be stuck with a field they were not looking to get into as much or have to do their chosen residency in a place they rather not live. In the time preceding the Match Day medical school students do an interview and application process. It is similar to when they tried to get into medical school by applying to 10 schools, except it is residency programs and the "match" is with their choices of places of residency as well as type of residency. The following are some links to help clear up the misconceptions a bit.

Military GME is not much different from civilian GME in that virtually all specialties and sub-specialties are represented. Joining the military will not limit the specialties from which a medical student may choose. For information about which specialties are offered by the different military branches and where the training programs are located....
The above is from the following source: Home - Military Graduate Medical Education

As an example of the choices available for someone in the AF Residency program: Specialties & Locations - Military Graduate Medical Education

Agreed! This person has posted in other threads and, judging by those, likely will helicopter her daughter into something else before long, especially since it sounds like she hasn't even gotten past freshman year of high school. To make it through medical training requires that the person wants to do a lot school work and they have to be very self motivated. If basic chemistry in college doesn't get them organic chem or biochem usually did. Been there and done it and watched the carnage.

I have known many people who have joined militaries to gain education, experiences, skills, benefits, to travel, to get away, to become a man, to get a husband, and all the other stuff that comes with it but forget that they are joining the militray. You join the militray to be military and all the other stuff comes with it. It can become a BIG mistake to look at the benefits while forgetting the role.

I know a few people like this as well. When the reality of getting sent to a country on the other side of the world to be targets for death catch up with them, it's usually too late to regret the decision.

The military is a lifestyle, you live it.
