Hello. New Air Force wife here. OK, so I've been hearing a few things about tech school and wanted to see if anyone has any good advice. So my husband is in boot camp right now (week 6). Only 2 more weeks left and then he will start his tech school down in San Angelo, TX. We were told when he was in DEP that me and the baby could not go with him during this time. Then my friend told me that her husband's school was about 9 months and they allowed her, her son, and her husband to get a house and stay together while he was doing his tech school. Now, she told me to ask my husband about this to see if we could do the same thing but the only difference is that his school is only 4 months. Does anyone know anything about this? Ask me questions if you need more information...

Thanks.

I was also in tech school in San Angelo (Intel). A classmate was married and had a kid and I believe her husband and daughter could not come until we were sent to our permanent duty station. I remember meeting them in Phase 2 or Phase 3, but I think they were staying in billeting. I could be wrong, but I think that was the case.

Things might have changed, as I was in Tech School in 1997. It also might be different for longer tech schools, because at some point it is considered a PCS.

It used to be 6 months was a Permanet Change of Station (PCS).

Your husband will not know what the deal is for sure until he reports in to his school after basic.

Not trying to be harsh but I wouldn't count on it. The military is training your husband to go to war and survive, not set up house.

Oh yeah, I'm not expecting to go or whatever but I just wanted to know if that was for a longer schooling time or if it was something we could do. I mean I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask but I highly doubt it as well. I'll just have to wait and see what happens. But yeah they told us we wouldn't be living together until we got our duty station. Thanks for the information guys. I appreciate it!

You should be able to visit thought. I am not sure what the phase program is but at some point he should get liberties and be able to hang out if you went for a weekend 1/2 way through.

I believe it is 20 wks or longer to live with him. Otherwise, you stay put and get to move to his first duty station with him after he graduates.

Yeah, that is the way it was for my classmate.

Don't worry, you won't be missing anything. Other than your husband, there is nothing in San Angelo you will want to see.

As Balad 1 and Lisdol say, the USAF will only pay for you to relocate to San Angelo if your hubby's tech school is long enough to make it a PCS. Otherwise, you're better off staying put and getting ready for your move (by saving up some money, getting rid of unwanted "stuff" and so on...) to the permanent base he'll be assigned to after tech school. Lisdol and dmarie123 have it right; he'll be focused heavily on his studies but a long weekend visit might be a good idea. Best of luck to you three!

Default Af tech school

I recently joined the air force and i'm waiting to leave for basic training for fire protection. I know basic training is 2 months and my tech school is 3 months, but will i get to communicate to my wife in tech school? and how long does tech school have to be to be considered PCS?
