How wouldn't want to be stationed in the middle of SF Bay. San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate and the Pacific northwest is just so steep in naval history from Sir Francis Drake, the great clipper ships, the war in the Pacific that sailing out of those two bases could help but make you feel a part of that history.
My FIL was stationed at Treasure Island. He then sailed off to Australia, where he met my MIL, a kiwi.

Probably the most memorable for me, that is now defunct, was Hunters Point, San Francisco. My ship lost more crew members in Hunters Point than we did in Viet Nam.

I'm scared to ask...

But... there was nothing like sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge. The only thing that I can think of that came close was peeling off from the USS Enterprise after an unrep or being in a line of destroyers and frigates cruising at flank speed and peeling off as we exited the Point Loma - Coronato inlet. That was cool.

Good post Ovcatto. We go down to the bay here once in a while to see the ships round Point Loma into the Navy Base.

Hubby did his basic at McClellan (MP), and was stationed at Presidio and Fort Pickett (BRACd in 1995 and now home to the VA National Guard). He speaks highly of his time at Presidio.

Clark AFB in The Philippines...
Don't remember it at all actually, but I was born in the base hospital many moons ago. The base was severely damaged by the eruption of Mt. Pinutubo in 1991 then abandoned by the U.S. and turned over to the Philippine government later that year.

Ft. Monroe, VA. Mom used to work there and I went to daycamp there. Great place being near the water and the beach in Hampton.
