I don’t know if this applies, but there was a time when a person enlisting in the military with enhanced rank would either serve a longer active duty enlistment or be required to complete regular reserve unit service after their initial active duty. May or may not apply in this case, but just a thought.

My experience has taught me that the needs of the Navy come first, then the needs of the individual can be considered. You will never get anything unless you ask for it, and do not be too proud to take "no" for an answer. There is an old saying, "Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do or die." You will go crazy seeking to make sense of every order or directive you are given. Sometimes you will have to trust that seniors have their reasons for what they order. In boot camp, you will learn what the response, Aye, Aye, Sir, means. (look it up.)
