Military Training Goals: Basic Military Training is designed to teach you the critical importance of discipline, teamwork and foundational knowledge you'll need to succeed as an Airman. It will prepare you physically as a warrior in the profession of arms. Successful completion earns you the privilege of proudly wearing the blue uniform of the most powerful Air Force in the world and the honor of protecting our Nation's freedoms.

Thunderbolt Certificate for Fitness Excellence
An extra town pass during graduation weekend
Recognition as most physically fit Airman

Exercise Information

How hard is the fitness program? It's rigorous and challenging. The program includes 1-one-hour daily fitness workouts, 6 days a week. Three days are dedicated to a strength building regimen (pushups, crunches, leg lifts, etc.) and three days reserved for aerobic training (running and sprinting). You need to prepare before you arrive.

A few weeks of Wii Fit should prepare you. Or you could do this 14 week program:

14 week program

Week 1
Complete the following in one session 3-5 times a week:
5 minute stretch/warm-up
2 minute sit-up/push-up intervals
5 minute walk
1 minute jog
5 minute walk
1 minute jog
3-5 minute walk
2 minute stretch

Week 2
Complete the following in one session 3-5 times a week:
5 minute stretch/warm-up
2 minute sit-up/push-up intervals
5 minute walk
3 minute jog
5 minute walk
3 minute jog
3-5 minute walk
2 minute stretch

Week 3
Complete the following in one session 3-5 times a week:
5 minute stretch/warm-up
2 minute sit-up/push-up intervals
4 minute walk
5 minute jog
4 minute walk

Week 4

16 years ago it was like Summer camp. I doubt much has changed even though it was extended by 2 weeks and they have added some actual military like stuff such as the pugil stick and the deployment briefing. The biggest thing to remember is that you are being broken down and then remade. Just go with it and you'll be golden.

I think it's beyond hilarious that they allow cell phones during Basic. I can still remember waiting in line for an hour to use the payphone with my handy dandy calling card for a five minute phone convo with my Mom.

Five minutees? I don't think I got a combined total of two minutes my entire 13 weeks!


FWIW AF does NOT have BOOT CAMP, they have Basic Military Training...BMT

I didn't care....I think it's funny that you say this since you were crying that EACH call was limited to 5 minutes

Poor thing you had to spend an hour of FREE time to make a call....

It's OK if you are in shape and not a moron. Just do what you are told.

My wife later went through officer school and said it was much more difficult than BMT, both mentally and physically.

I think the pissing contest among branches is a bit ridiculous.

Every branch has a role to play.

We took down Milosovic and the Serbs in 1999 with nothing but air power. Many Marines did not have to die on the ground because of the work I did and the work my fellow airmen did. I spent months deployed sleeping on a cot and working 12 hour days to provide intelligence to the commanders and pilots. I never had sand in my mouth and kicked down a door, so is my service less significant?

The nature of warfare is changing.

We can kill many of our enemies from 60,000 feet with a drone that is piloted by an airman in Nevada with intelligence supplied by an airman in Florida.

That all starts at Lackland.

The Air Force, as a stand-alone branch, is more important to the military now than it has ever been.
