I hear the budget cuts hurt the military bad and Obama is trying to shrink the Army to before WW2 levels.

I have been hearing a lot of things about the Army, and the military for the past 40+ years. Yesterday was the 46th Anniversary of my being drafted.

So i guess you question is "The U.S Army, Is It Worth Joining?". In the end it was for me. The Army, The military, federal employment and even employment is not for everyone...

I stayed in and retired in 1990... My second semi-reirement came came about 10+ years later, and my third retirement came last year.

Staying in the military was worth it for me...

Simply stated:
For the right reasons - YES !
For the wrong reasons - NO !

For the relatively short time (compared to Poncho's time) I served, I worked FOR the US Government.
After that, very often WITH the government.

I liked, being able to say *NO* in the second part of my professional life.
But ... , I did well in both periods !

What do you consider wrong reasons?

I want to join because I want to set myself up for success, I also think I could use the discipline.

Going in as *a last resort* ! --- nothing else worked.

During my short time, I met some, who really should NOT have been serving !
They were almost always *complaining* !

I was *drafted* (the lottery system) - then went for another short stint.
Did not *like* it.

Just like any other job.
You like it, you stay.
You do not like it, find another job !

If you enjoy being yelled at by some monkey and having a daddy to tell you when to turn off the lights, when to eat, make your bed, when to go to sleep and etc...

Basically if your an adult child then the army is the perfect job for you.

If you think it might be a good idea then it probably is.

Going Air Force got me out of L.A., instilled needed self-discipline, camaraderie, travel, and a trade which became a successful technical career.

Try to get a guaranteed job if they still do that.

Also explore the other services for what they offer.

Realize that recruiters are salespeople and each one will declare their branch as the right one for you so research independently of them to begin with.

Good luck in your decision!

I've contacted the Navy, I said "I would like to serve in the U.S Navy". They chuckled, got my information and never called back. The Air Force seems too easy. I have either the Army or Marines in mind. They're the ones who took me seriously just as I take my decision seriously and they're also the branches that (to me) will challenge me the most mentally and physically.

But I also want some action, maybe I will if Russia decides to invade Ukraine again.

I don't know what the future holds for our military but as of now it still seems like a good choice if one really wants to join. They pay for school, teach you self-discipline, help with job-training and you get the pick of jobs when you get out.
