But how would they know? Getting a visitors pass doesn't require a background check. I've sponsored dozens of people on base that got visitors passes and none ever were asked about their criminal history or had background checks. To get the visitor pass they just took down name, address, drivers license number, registration info, car insurance information and wrote the pass.

As has been said, access requirements are base specific and it would be much easier to address the OP specifically if they would tell us the base and service.

I know, and I live at the base LBTRS was referencing, and am backing him up with my experience that even checking IDs of all car occupants at the gate is spotty at times, let alone background checking. Different bases do things differently; as ours contains our branch's only boot camp, and as such, there is a steady influx of one-time visitors on a consistently rolling basis. I've certainly experienced bases that are much more stringent, however, the one we're at right now really just isn't.

The sentry will scan the driver license and record the driver's name, license number, and date, time and location of entry. The license is authenticated and an instant background check through open public sources is conducted. After favorable results, the visitor is allowed to proceed aboard the installation.
For instance, this does not happen with any regularity, here. Only once in the past nine months have our vehicle occupants been asked for ID. Every other time, the gate sentry scans my spouse's ID or my ID (dependent ID or civilian employee ID, depending on the context of my business on base) and lets us through. On Memorial Day weekend, they checked my mother-in-law's ID and her friend, who was visiting us's, ID. That's the only time it's ever happened since we arrived last fall.

Because to get a visitors pass she would have to fill out a bunch of forms, and they do background checks right there.

If you mean an unescorted visitor's pass--one that would allow a person to come and go on base without the military sponsor as a continuous escort--yes.

Exclamation Military Life and Issues "General Chat!"

I've no idea if this Forum has had one before but sometimes I come across a news story or think of something that is interesting but not really warranting a thread of it's own. It'd be nice if this catches on but if not... oh well. Anyway, here's something to start...

Some of you may have been aware of this story from a couple of days ago: UN peacekeepers held in Golan Heights, well today it was pleasingly updated with Filipino UN troops escape Islamists in Golan Heights.

Not a good situation to have been in but from what I can gather it looks like they performed commendably.

[If this idea meets with approval making it a "sticky" would be great, else please delete this as you see fit, thank you.]

For the next couple of days I'll be with our (French) team at the INVICTUS GAMES in London.

The idea was inspired by the Warrior Games that HRH Prince Harry visited in Colorado last year and has teams from 14 countries including the USA. There has been a good amount of publicity for the event in Britain with some BBC coverage and a moderate amount on French media. I have no idea what the reporting has been like in other countries but at the very least I hope there has been some.

I like the idea of this being an International event.

These are the countries that have sent teams to this, the inaugural event: TEAMS

BBC News - Prince Harry's Invictus Games opening speech [contains 2min video]
Quote:
The Invictus Games for wounded servicemen and women have opened at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London.
The Games, organised by Prince Harry, will see competitors from 13 countries take part in events over four days.
The Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duke of Cambridge attended the opening ceremony, along with 6,500 spectators.
Prince Harry, who was introduced by US First Lady Michelle Obama, said "lives will be changed" by the Games.
He told the crowd: "Over the next four days we will see some truly remarkable achievements.
"For some of those taking part this will be a stepping stone to elite sport. But for others, it will mark the end of a chapter in their recovery and the beginning of a new one.
"Either way, you can be sure that everyone who takes part on the track, pool or field of play will be giving it their all. And I have no doubt that lives will be changed this weekend."

The Invictus Games has been a great thing to be a part of even if I've just been here to help out the team in any way I can. Talking to the competitors from all the countries has been enjoyable, rewarding, amusing and moving at times but everyone has had a passion for being here and for competing.

No-one is here just to make up the numbers. They're here for their countries, their service and themselves, to show what they can and have achieved. It's impressive.

Here are the competitors. They're worthy of your recognition.

Being military myself - now retired, I can see that the competitive nature we showed in the military might always be with us.

Best of luck and may you have Blue Skies

It was a fine way to mark a historic occasion and to have veterans of the original drop there must have only made it more special for all involved.

BBC News - Battle of Arnhem commemorated by paratroops [contains 2min video]
Quote:
Paratroops from Europe and the US have completed parachute jumps in the Netherlands to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem.
Operation Market Garden during World War Two saw Allied forces land behind German lines near Arnhem, where they were defeated after days of fighting.

Germany is also taking part in the commemoration, which will be followed by a short remembrance service.
The battle was the inspiration for the film A Bridge Too Far.
