You can not go to basic training until you have gone through the recruitment process and have been sworn in.

In 2001 11.7 percent did not complete Marine Corps basic training.

That came from an old document ( http://www.defense.gov/news/newsarticle.aspx?id=44772 ) and varies from service to service over time.

wow.
thank you for the info!

that's.. baffling to me. i've always considered US military to be one of the best organizations. The more I learn of it, the more I am disappointed.

I am sorry, why would you be disappointed? The U.S Military is the strongest, best trained, best equipped military in the world:

I am a retired U.S. Soldier. I was drafted, but I still served proudly. You are entitled to your opinion... Because the United States of America is a free country... (But this is a private site).

The enlistment begins when you sign the paperwork. By the time you go to Basic/Boot Camp, you're committed to that contract.

Poncho, I mean no disrespect.
I am a draftee as well, but for a different country. We always thoughts of the US military as the top of the line, best at everything kind of entity.

I am learning that it has a lot of bureaucracy and unnecessary movements, just like the army I was exposed to. "Just" with better training, better equipment, and true patriots.

Mire, thank you for correcting my understanding as well. I appreciate it.

The military in itself cannot bring out in you what doesn't already exists.

This isn't the Boy Scouts where you can just try it out and then quit if you don't like it. That's why there's a contract.

We are the best.

But like most things (all?) with the government, there's going to be bureaucracy and unnecessary movements.
