I am a retired U.S. Soldier. I was drafted, but I still served proudly. You are entitled to your opinion... Because the United States of America is a free country... (But this is a private site).

thank you for clarifying.
I was under impression that one had an opportunity to drop out after the basic, and prior to the enlistment, as well as commanding personnel has an opportunity to kick some off.
The enlistment begins when you sign the paperwork. By the time you go to Basic/Boot Camp, you're committed to that contract.
Poncho, I mean no disrespect.
I am a draftee as well, but for a different country. We always thoughts of the US military as the top of the line, best at everything kind of entity.
I am learning that it has a lot of bureaucracy and unnecessary movements, just like the army I was exposed to. "Just" with better training, better equipment, and true patriots.
Mire, thank you for correcting my understanding as well. I appreciate it.
What are your thoughts on ones wanting to use the military as a tool to improve their life? I am older, and curious, if there was anyone like this? Not speaking from free ride standpoint.
The military in itself cannot bring out in you what doesn't already exists.

This isn't the Boy Scouts where you can just try it out and then quit if you don't like it. That's why there's a contract.

We are the best.
But like most things (all?) with the government, there's going to be bureaucracy and unnecessary movements.
