If I was retired I would consider taking a month or two and just go places. With no worries it would be a lot of fun!!

add the health care benefit to that...for your entire family - I know families who pay hundreds of dollars (if not more) just for their coverage...me? I invested from day one as a Soldier and put every cent I could in TSP and mutual fund investments and developed a pretty nice nest egg that I can tap into if the pension isn't sufficient.

but if you're still raising a family as a pensioner, of course, you're going to have to continue working to pay for their bills

Yep. People need to look and weigh ALL the benefits you get from being a military retiree. Yes, you may still have to work, but manage your money well and you wonít have to work yourself to death.
