If anyone has ever refinanced their VA home purchase with another VA-backed loan (think: VA refinance) and didn't have to pay the closing cost, you have definitely enjoyed the benefits of a "military discount"!

I am not military but I think they should get discounts everywhere. They serve their country so you can feel safe.

Enlisted people don't get much $ for risking their life and all the crappy hours they put in, plus possible PTSD and all the drugs they have to pump in their bodies to last until they retire. Nobody gives a crap if they fall apart once they are out.

At least give them some respect and a few discounts here and there. We owe it to them.

LOL.

I have a cousin in the reserves who milks the free meals in and discounts whenever he can. Kid has never been anywhere or done anything besides basic and AIT.

I haven't cashed in on one of those free Veterans Day meals. In fact, when people ask if I'm military, I just tell them no!

With the exception of the draftees from WWII, Korea and Viet Nam, these veterans enlisted freely and are not "special". We veterans do not deserve any special treatment, any more than anyone else that works in the civilian world.

I received my draft notice in Feb 1957, after Korea, before Viet Nam. In the 50s if you were able and didn't have a college deferment you would be drafted. There was no lottery at that time.

They get ENOUGH discounts, those are free handouts as far as I am concerned. The reason they join is because of the FREE stuff, lets be honest. If they took all that stuff away, how many people would join? probaby none.

Yeah that's it. People join for all the free stuff.

Totally.

I asked my husband...he says a Veteran's Day freebie massage at Massage Envy made those deployments to Iraq so completely worth it. I mean, hey, free massage, amirite?

I never ask for a military discount. I do get one every time I get a haircut at Great Clips only because she cut my hair while I was active and knows that I retired. She gives me two dollars off for having a military ID and I give it back to her in a $5 tip instead of the $3 she would get if I paid full price for the haircut. I don't want the extra $2 but don't mind giving it to the gal that has been cutting my hair for the last ten years.

Haircut costs $11 and she gets a $5 tip.

Oh yeah, to get a free meal once a year was totally worth giving up the other 364 days.
