Well, I enlisted in the Navy right after my high school graduation in May 1968. My dad was a Seabee in the Navy. I was on three different destroyers out of San Diego/Long Beach, California. Made my first "Westpac" (Western Pacific) cruise in 1969. The ships I was on were part of a Destroyer Escort Group for the Aircraft Carriers....U.S.S. Kitty Hawk and Enterprise. After my Honorable Discharge, I went to College on my GI Bill and I used my VA Hospital benefits for a number of years.
During the week of Veterans Day, Knotts Berry Farm in Buena Park Calif, opened the amusement park FREE to all Vets and their wives and other family members got into the park for only $10. "Thank you Knotts Berry Farm!!" I have seen the "mobile" Viet Nam Memorial Wall twice and it brought tears to my eyes both times.
I have pictures, printed off of the Internet, of the first destroyer I was on, I have a letter I sent to my mom and dad from "Yankee Station" in Viet Nam, I have a Mother's Day card (and pin) I sent to my mom while overseas, I have all of my medals/ribbons (5) and I even have my Navy Basic Training Graduation picture from Great Lakes, Illinois.
We will be proudly flying our American Flag all day tomorrow. We love America and we love the FREEDOM we have.......given to us by all the "active duty" military personnel and all of the Veterans. Again and again...
"Thanks to all of you and I stand and salute you!!!"
im a vietnam vet. im going to the veterans hospital this weekend. thank yous are better said infront of someone that really needs and deserves it. i was lucky to have been shot at an missed. many suffer for life with injuries. this country talks way to much, it needs real action to the vets. PLEASE go visit them, shake there hand, and let it be a real day of thanks. GOD bless them all.
THANKYOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To each and every one of you that has served, is serving & will serve our GREAT NATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And I totally agree that all vets should get discounts!!! In fact we voted on an amendment in FL to give additional homestead to vets! And it passed!
Vets should be treated WAY better than they are!!!!!! I've heard terrible stories about sick vets not getting proper medical care. And that's just not acceptable. These people are the heart & soul of OUR NATION & deserve nothing but THE UTMOST RESPECT and the best of everything!!!!!!
(And MoMark, I thought you were "cool" before, now I think you're even "cooler"! ) BLESS AMERICA & BLESS OUR VETERANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I too want to thank all the vets past and present! Even when our men and women come home from Iraq, our war on terror still continues!! I thank God for all our brave military who will cont. to fight for our country!!!
In fact we voted on an amendment in FL to give additional homestead to vets! And it passed!
The only problem with that is it only included those combat vets who were living in Florida at the time they enlisted. That leaves out alot of veterans in this state.

Thank you to the people serving our country and also a big thank you to their families. It must be so difficult when you have a child, brother, sister or spouse away fighting a war.
Oh, one thing I forgot to mention in my last posting, I did not get married or have a serious girlfriend during the years I was in the Navy. Why? On my second Wespac cruise to Nam, as the ship was leaving the dock (and wives/girlfriends were on the pier waving "goodbye"), one of the sailors, whose wife was on the pier crying, yelled out "He__ with this" and jumped over the side into the water. Shore Patrol was right there to pick him up, handcuff him and off to the Brig he went. For myself, I just didn't have what it took to be married or have a serious girlfriend and leave her for 6 months.
I've just watched the service of Remembrance as I always do,I was surprised during the march past at the number of young people present representing parents killed in recent conflicts.
One vet who wasn't there was the oldest suviving member of WW1, he was in France laying a wreath for his comrades, he is 110 years old!
The last thing the commentator said was "The saddest thing of today's service is that the killing still goes on"
