Ive heard many stories of people that used to get into trouble with the law when they were young and the Judge gave them a choice of jail / reform school, etc or military.

with todays strict military enlistment standards, can they even do that these days?

I read that actor and former USMC DI LEE R Ermey joined the Marines at age 17 because the judge gave him a choice of Jail or military.

Military is fussier as to who they will take now than then.

But they are drawing from a 90% smaller pool

I served in the US Army back in 1957-1960 and we always heard that rumor back then, but I never met anyone that admitted to it. We were simply draftees or enlistees.

I've always found it ironic that the military wants only the healthiest, best, brightest young people...to be willing to sacrifice their lives

It would make more sense to send broken people out to war rather than sacrificing the best & brightest.

When you enlist there's actually a form you sign where you specifically state that you are not joining in lieu of jail time.

These days we're kicking people out left and right. We aren't hurting for manpower so badly that we'd turn to the criminal justice system for procuring new servicemembers.

Heck, even the French Foreign Legion is fussier than it used to be. That being said... mercenaries still do exist in this world.

So you want morons who can't make responsible decisions to fight for your freedom? Wouldn't you want those who will win the wars? It's actually pretty hard to get into most military branches now. They are cutting down on size and many young men and women want to serve their country.

Not if you have to fight beside them. That's a dumb idea that stays dumb no matter how often it re-occurs.

I did have a classmate back in the early 70s who was given the choice. The was the "class thug" (yeah, just like we had a class clown, we also had a class thug). He was given the choice, took the USMC option, went AWOL from Boot, came back to town, robbed a liquor store, went to prison anyway.

But that was back during the Vietnam war...times are different now.
