Good try though.
your correction of the correction is wrong!... E-5 is not a rate, it's a rank. Your rank is your paygrade. your rate is your job.

And there's the NEC:

Quote:
The Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC) system supplements the enlisted rating structure in identifying personnel on active or inactive duty and billets in manpower authorizations. NEC codes identify a non-rating wide skill, knowledge, aptitude, or qualification that must be documented to identify both people and billets for management purposes.
I was a 4204.

I think you better look into this more. My 26 years in the Navy says otherwise.

Nope. Your job is your rating, your pay grade is your rate (if enlisted, rank if you are commissioned).

E-5 is a paygrade. PO2 is a rank. MM2 is a ... Well, that's for another time.

No, it's not. PO2 is the rate, MM2 is the rating.

I was always under the impression that your "rate" was a combination of your paygrade (E-6) and your rating (BM). So your rate was would be BM1.

Big Navy, however, disagrees:
"The use of the word "rank" for Navy enlisted personnel is incorrect. The term is "rate." The rating badge is a combination of rate (pay grade, as indicated by the chevrons) and rating (occupational specialty, as indicated by the symbol just above the chevrons)."

But we digress....

Your point is well taken. That, however, doesn't change the fact that the official Navy position is as I quoted above.
