Burrito bowls, meat sticks and more are coming to your MREs in 2017

A new Meal, Ready-to-Eat (MRE) is set to debut in 2017 and will feature a chicken burrito bowl entree, according to officials with the Army’s Combat Feeding Directorate. It is a mix of chicken, rice, chili peppers and beans in a flexible pouch similar to a commercial tuna pouch, said Julie Smith, senior food technologist at CFD, part of the Natick Soldier, Research, Development and Engineering Center in Massachusetts.

The burrito bowl MRE will also have a trail mix that contains pretzels, peanuts, cashews and almonds. Smith said the mix offers a 3-to-1 carb-to-protein ratio that will aid in the warfighter’s recovery. A teriyaki meat stick will be included as an alternative to beef jerky.

Yum....

Our military has come a long way since the days of C-rats (e.g. O.D. cans of "Ham and Eggs", "Beef and Potatoes" or my favorite "Chicken or Turkey Boned" (your choice) .

Seriously, as one who sustained myself on C-rats during my tours of duty in Marine Corps combat arms units I'm glad to see that nutritional R&D is being considered in field rations before they are purchased and issued to our military personnel. All calories aren't created equal. Balancing carbs, fats and proteins in MRE's will help enhance performance and well being on combat operations and exercises.
