I'm not sure why he's being told false information.

The OP said her son was told to he needed to return or shred his passport, according the regs, that seems to be accurate information.

Yes, I agree MsBall, but she was also told he had to renounce his citizenship and that you do that by shredding your passport. Those last two items are not true.
