If you're already married, you can enter Japan on a spouse visa.

On the trash here in yokosuka. I was reading all the info they gave us to read online before the move and truthfully on base anyways it's not as complex as they make it. Maybe out in town it is that way, which may be another good reason to live on base. When I had read online the trash service it said you had to seperate into like 3 or 4 different types of trash and put each type out on certain days at certain times or wait til the next pick up day for that type of trash, etc.
Here on yokosuka they only seperate into 2 different types. Burnable and non burnable..basically non burnable would be like glass, metal, hard food containers, plastic bottles things like that and burnable would be like food waste and paper type products and you just take your trash down whenever. They do though ask that you wash out containers before you throw them out..but if you think about it...kinda makes sense. doesn't take that long to rinse it out and keeps bugs away from your trash. I throw out trash every morning here anyways but still it sits overnight and I usually take it out first thing in the morning on the way to taking my son to school.
But yes that is true. Not all american's don't seperate their trash. Some people in the US are adamant about recycling..I suppose it's the same in every country , you get those that do and those that dont.

Yokosuka Housing
What is the waiting time to obtain on base housing in the townhouses? I have two kids (4 and 2 year olds) and a (Shi Tsu small dog). I would be equivalent to a GM-14 rank. Would that put me up higher on the housing list?
For off base housing, Does off base housing consist of aparments, townhouses or single family homes ? What are the rental price ranges (1 bath 3 bedroom? Is off base housing available that would allow for small dog? Is there a containment time period for pets when you bring them into Japan?
I have a one year assignment coming up at Yokosuka and would love have my family along as I did in Portugal. How is the DODDs school there?

What area would you suggest for a couple in the range of $2000 to $2500 per month rent. Preferably close to Yokosuka base.
Thanks again for your input.

Sorry for the delay in answering work is hectic as you can imagine. Housing agents are all over the place near the base. I dealt with one called Rehouse which is located on what us americans call Blue Street. Ask for Miho. She will take good care of you and speaks good english.

If you are a contractor don't even think that you will get on-base housing. They just do not have enough. Off base housing consists of all 3 types depending on how far from base you want to live, how much money you want to spend, etc. American size 3 BR 1 Bath single family house will run you probably 3 - 4k / month if you can find one. For one year it might be best to leave the family in the states and bring them over on summer break from school for a couple months. As for the dog, well you will get it out of quarantine about 1 1/2 - 3 months after you arrive. I know this sounds harsh but it is the way it is here.

Hi Alicia. you dont have to stay in san diego by yourself. you can join your husband in yokosuka. If you are married for more than 3 years and you are a USA resident you can expedite your citizenship. Are you a resident? if not, you have to become a resident first. Dont go there without fixing your immigration status, its going to be hard for you to get a job and you dont know how Japan rules are with Mexican people. Its better for you going there as a american citizen. so Please let me know what your immigration status is in that way I can explain to you what to do.

ATM's have changed dramatically in the last 1 1/2 years. All 7-11 (yes we have them) ATM machines will take US ATM cards provided they are on Plus or Visa network. The exchange rate is just as good if not better than on base and they do not charge a fee. English language instructions to boot! Japan Post Office ATM's will take them also but the hours are limited, usually closing by 6:00 at night or so. Base ATMs are with Navy Fed and Community bank. Community bank will also change money for you but Bank of Yokohama about 20 mins walk from main gate generally has a better rate. Bank of Yokohama also has the traveler check premium.
Hi all, My husband will soon be stationed in Yokosuka and I will be following shortly. Could you explain just what the "traveler check premium" at Bank of Yokohama is? Do we need to have an account there? We have a Navy Fed CU acct already. Thanks for your help!
