How long does it take mail to get to a ship( carrier) when its out to sea? Do they get email easily through regular email addresses like yahoo, aol, etc? Or is it a ships email?
My boyfriend's home base is Yakosuka, and its his first deployment.

Your husband's command should and will be able to answer that question. It will be either the POMI, HRD or Navy Legal office that will have the answer. You both will have to get an overseas screening and you will eventually get what is called "SOFA" sponsored by his new command here in Japan. It stands for Status of Forces Agreement. Like I said, his command should be able to answer all your questions.
Japan is awesome. You will love it!

Would I be able to go to school for my assoc. degree there? On the base do anybody know if they hire dental assistant on base. Any other info. would be helpful. Do the G.W. go out alot? I was stationed at Yokota AB, Japan many years ago (1982-1986) but also went to Yokosuka (about 4 hours by car) many times. I don't know how Yokosuka hires people, but back then Yokota used Japanese women as dental assistants. As for school, I took nighttime classes from the University of Maryland.
Here is the Yokosuka base newspaper archive that can provide useful info (you'll need a PDF reader):
https://www.cnic.navy.mil/Yokosuka/S...MITAKAARCHIVES
Good luck on your tour...you'll enjoy it, especially if you go off base a lot.

Hi everyone! My husband and I just got orders to Yokosuka in January 2010, for the next 3 years. I'm completely lost as to what we should do, bring, etc. I've never been out of the US before! We're getting the Japanese Rosetta Stone, and I signed up with my language exchange to get a japanese pen pal to help me practice, but other than that.....I'm lost. Any advice is greatly appreciated. And if anyone will be over there while I am, I'm always up for making new friends!

Congratulations! If I may, ask what command are you going to? We have been here for almost a year and enjoy it thoroughly. We have three girls, aged 10, 11 1/2, and 15 years. The schools are wonderul and the base/local area had everything you could need. Housing is pretty decent. The weather is hot and HUMID in the summer, with a fair amount of rain thru the year and a relatively pleasant fall, winter, and spring. You can email me at jigeary@hotmail.com for more info if you like. I also have have Vonage with a stateside phone number for easier calling. TIP: Sign up for it before you leave the states and bring the equipment with you. They won't ship it over here, but they will let you have an account from here. Also, the base cable office now offers VOIP service if you prefer. Hope you have an easy transition.

I'm not quite sure about all the details yet, I do know he'll be working in the naval hospital as the drug and alcohol abuse awareness counselor. We don't have any children, but we do have a kitten. I've heard mixed responses from people about bringing her over with us. Do you have any advice on that? Thanks for the tip about Vonage! And thanks so much for your response!

We will be there
Hello, My husband and I are going over in November this year for 3 years.
We have 2 cats that we are taking with us. We don't have kids either, but are going to the Blue Ridge. I am always open to new friends, especially since we will be so far from home.
You need to start getting your cat ready now if you plan to take her with you.
Japan District Veterinary Command
This website will help you with all the information you need for getting your cat ready. She will have to be microchipped and have her shots up to date. It isn't really that expensive if you go to a base vet, but in town it can cost a fortune.
Good luck with everything and if you have any other questions, email me at auntie_chell at hotmail dot com. I'm Michelle.
