another GO who was prior enlisted was LTG Nathaniel Thompson.
those I know would have been in logistics and there are several GOs who were prior enlisted, am sure combat arms had a bunch.

Unsure but while in the Army the Generals I've met (4 of them) are the coolest most down to earth people I have ever met. I am sure it was different not so long ago haha. In WLC the chain of command is all enlisted since its an NCO course. When we had our final run the 2 Star General came out and ran with us...yes he left us all in his dust.
Sounds similar to the fictional Sam Damon in Once An Eagle by Anton Meyer. The novel was on the required reading list in my brigade.

Unfortunately most of an officers career will be on staff no matter how talented they are. Staff officers are not inherently evil-but someone who doesn’t know that would read about the Massengale character’s actions and likely think they were *caused* by being on staff rather than a symptom of his psychopathy.
