Officer Discharge. Commissioned officers cannot receive bad conduct discharges or a dishonorable discharge, nor can they be reduced in rank by a court-martial. If an officer is discharged by a general court-martial, they receive a Dismissal notice which is the same as a dishonorable discharge.
he's some dumb kid. college kids do dumb stuff all the time. give him KP and get over it.
No, West Point is supposed to drum the stupid out of them, or at least cover it with a thick layer of fear of consequences.
What he did as a cadet might be just immaturity, but revealing it at this point is a level of invincible stupidity that will get good troops killed in the future.
Perhaps the US Army should do things like the British. When the potential officer completes his degree he goes to Sandhurst for intensive military training.
For the minority which go to an Officer's Candidate School that is what happens. Think of Richard Gere in An Officer and a Gentleman 35 years ago. Most go through just as intense in periods but more sustained Academy or Academy like private college such as The Citadel or ROTC with their summer training camp before commissioning and then their branch school before going to a unit.
I do believe that when the Lieutenant finishes at Fort Benning instead of the platoon he was penciled in to lead he will be an assistant to an assistant staff officer and everybody in the Army would know he has the kiss of death on him if he tells what his assignment is. Now if he went through West Point and decided he didn't want to have any risk of a combat assignment it may have been an intentional act. And coming out of the Army will future employers really ask or will they understand his standing relative to his peers assuming the senior rater gives him low marks even if he excels at his make do hide away job? Or will he be just a Lieutenant from a fine university who did his duty during a time of war?
Maybe nothing will happen to this guy at all and we will learn that it's ok to be a communist or socialist while serving in the military because that's what being inclusive is all about.

The Army might court-martial him, but a general court-martial is such a bother.
I think it is entirely possible that rather than a dismissal following a general-court martial, the Army will do something like that: Put him in a closet and give him bad ink that will ensure he is never advanced and disenrolled out at the first calendar opportunity

Considering his decorations show that he is a prior enlisted combat vet, I don't think he is trying to shirk a combat assignment.
Bad as they are, his political views are his political views. The real issue is the political statement while in uniform as a cadet. My guess, Article 15 for that, which pretty much kills any promotion opportunity, but keep him in doing the officer equivalent of Permanent Latrine Orderly for his full commitment.
I have a son who's trying to get into USMA. His first thought was who didn't get a slot because this guy did.
Apparently the guy served six months in 1st Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment, seeing combat for which he received a Combat Infantry Badge. He is now a 2nd LT in the 10th Mountain Division.
However, he lasted only six months before being RFS'd by the Regiment (according to the website US Army WTF), mainly due to insubordination. He then somehow got into West Point, and the Democrat that helped get him in is now regretting it. His own dad is disavowing what his son did.
One of the more serious things this idiot did was make inflammatory statements against politicians like Mike Pence, which is clearly forbidden under UCMJ and grounds for serious punishment including being kicked out of the Army altogether.
Apparently he is now in Ranger School so will be interesting to see what happens.
With a 5 year commitment let him serve until his time is up. Maybe as permanent KP (pots and pans) for a couple of years first, then on to cleaning grease traps. Somebody has to do it, might as well be him, nothing says a 2nd LT can't do those jobs.
Well, that likely won't happen but as a starter revoke the West Point degree then - ah I don't know - certainly pay back the $$$s without recourse (no bankruptcy for that either). Serious punishment???, then out.
