My brother recently passed away. He served in both the Army and Air Force in the 50's and early 60's. Box 3a of his Army DD-214 says Pfc E3 (P) and his Air Force DD-214 says A2C E-3 (P). I know what his Ranks and Pay Grades were, but I don't know what the "(P)" means. Can someone enlighten me?

In the Army, the (P) meant it was a Permanent rank. Sometimes a soldier was given a higher rank which was (T), Temporary. Or Corporal E-4 was a higher rank than a Specialist E-4. It was still in effect when I was drafted in 1968.
