While watching the pre-race activities at the Indianapolis 500 yesterday, I saw the Presentation of the Colors, a rifle squad fired a salute, and a bugler played "Taps". I was then astounded to hear people in the crowd (although clearly a minority) actually applauding, some even cheering. Are people so entirely unknowing of the significance of the music and of the whole Memorial Day holiday that they would applaud and cheer that particular music?

Isn't the proper response to the playing of "Taps" simply respectful silence?

It is. Sounds like some people were getting a too drunk a little too early. Hopefully, those sitting nearby gave these people a little talk about inappropriate behavior.

Taps generally is not applauded, but the protocol knowledge of Random Average Yokel is pretty abysmal.

I come across tons of people who think Memorial Day is really just Random Military Appreciation / Start of Summer Day. They do not actually know it is about the fallen. I'm sure quite a few of these same people do not know what Taps is, either. These people were probably just cheering because "Yay, supporting troops!" or, yeah, they were already drunk.

I'm not patriotic for the most part, but I think this type of thing should be general knowledge for Americans.

OK, I guess I'll go with that.

But it's still pretty hard to fathom the idea of applauding "Taps".

Every where you go, you will encounter foolish, unknowing people. Ignore them.
Not that it matters, and just so you know where my thinking comes from, I am a Viet Nam veteran, and a military retiree.
