I need a gift idea. My best work girlfriend is having a graduation/going away party for her daughter, who is enlisted in the Marines and leaving later this month. I've never met the girl, but I would like to attend the party, for my friend, but what do I gift her daughter? She's told me that she will leave with the clothes on her back, ID, small notebook with addresses for letter writing, and $20 in her wallet.
perhaps give her a spa event, day at the fitness club, something like that to use before she goes. If she is going into Marine basic, the less stuff she has the better for her.
Give her Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover book to read after basic. Pretty sure she won't be able to read much of anything during training except what they tell her.
Give her a nice bound type book to use as a diary to record her experience during her service. Her children and grandchildren will appreciate it years down the road.
Is there a list of what they're allowed to take? I'm sure it's not much. How much time between the party and when she leaves? Maybe a gift certificate for a pizza?
She won't be taking much to basic with her, but she'll have personal belongings in her home when she is done with her initial training. I wouldn't necessarily limit what I get just because nobody takes excess stuff to boot camp.

Unless you're a Hollywood Marine. Then you take a pair of Ray Ban sunglasses and a set of golf clubs.
