i just answered a service-person related question...and it brought to mind a decades old remembrance about a service man we kinda adopted from that Gulf War....

I'd like to see if he is still down at Fort Bragg, i doubt he is still enlisted some twenty years later, but i'd love to thank him for his service, tell him my own son was inspired by him to join the army, just let him know he was admired for his own service to our country. and i am still very grateful for his service

They’re all voluntary. Not everyone wants to be randomly found or contacted by the general public after their service. I would say if they are on those sites they implicitly don’t mind being contacted.
