President Trump officially directed the Pentagon to establish a sixth branch of the U.S. military in space on Monday. Speaking at a National Space Council meeting at the White House, Mr. Trump called for a "space force" to ensure American dominance on the high frontier.

The president also signed his administration's third Space Policy Directive, calling for establishment of new protocols and procedures to manage and monitor the increasing numbers of satellites in low-Earth orbit and the tens of thousands of pieces of space junk and debris that pose an increasing threat to costly spacecraft

If there is an officers' academy such as at Annapolis, West Point or Colorado Springs, will the trainees be called Space Cadets?

Expect the Air Force to thwart in early stages. Loss of power and scope for them.

The Battle for the A10 Warthog all over again.

Still if we are truly outward looking and we use computers in orbit, it had to happen sometime

"Space Force" - FOR WHAT? Another way to waste money. It sounds like something a seven year old kid would dream up.

Our infrastructure is crumbling but we need a "Space Force".

I would note that you generally can't get to "space" without going through "air".

Just saying.

It does sounds like something a seven year old would dream up in order to get some pats on the head.

Can't get to most land wars without going over the ocean, either.

Not as far fetched as some believe. Satellites can be used as a foreign nation’s military target against USA and they can develop and launch weaponized satellites to not only attack our nation’s satellites, but also use it as a weapon against certain buildings. Imagine targeting a satellite to crash land into the White Hoise or Pentagon. Specific satellites for US military could be targeted. Communications and weather satellites could also be targeted. They may not be space marines like in science fiction film, but they may be more like Air Force desk jockeys using joystick or keyboard controls to fight in space.
