Not many people alive today really understand just how damn vicious the Pacific theater of operation was. Until the atomic bombings, a very long bloody invasion of Imperial Japan was anticipated. The Imperial Japanese "Bushido" code strikes me as both magnificent discipline, and total idiocy.

For a lot of American combat troops the surrender of Japan was a reprieve from a death sentence. Many of these troops survived campaigns in Europe and were slated to be reassigned to the forces tasked to carry out the invasion of Japan. America’s greatest generation faced dangers that most Americans of this generation will never have to face. Respect.
